SOIL MECHANICS LABORATORY
During the past years, many soil samples were tested in the Soil Mechanics Lab among which, a record of 1,205 soil samples were tested in a single year i.e 2018-19 for various ongoing projects like Kaleswaram and PRLIS which were urgent and important.
The soil test results were utilized for formation of embankments of Uddandapur Reservoir, Kurumurthyraya sagar reservoir, Venkatadri Reservoir of PRLIS and also for the formation of Embankments of Sri Komaravelli Mallanna sagar reservoir, Baswapur Reservoir, Kondapochamma reservoir etc. of Kaleswaram project.
The revenue collected towards testing charges and deposited in the PAO(W&P) during the past five years i.e. from 2015-16 to 2019-20 was to the tune of about 1.70 Crores.
In addition to the above works, the Administrative Approval for Rs. 215.0 Lakhs towards the procurement of machinery and equipment in Soil Mechanics Lab was obtained during 2018 and machinery worth Rs.147 Lakhs is already procured and installed in the lab.
--- Received medal from CBIP for a contribution about the Permeability Characterisation of the Soils during 1960.
--- Received awards from the CBIP for developing an “ELECTRONIC TORPEDO” for measurement of settlements in earthdams in 1970.
--- Received a medal from the CBIP for a contribution about the Liquefaction Analysis in 1980. Based on analytical methods this laboratory has proved in 1983, that there will be no possibility for Liquefaction at Polavaram Barrage site. The design office insisted for experimental studies to be conducted at the school of Earth Quake Engineering, Roorke University which took more than five years time and cost about Rs.10,00,000/-. The results obtained from the above experiment were found to be in perfect agreement with the predictions based on Analytical studies.
--- This Lab has developed compression Index equation in 1980, which was found to be in perfect agreement with similar equations developed in other countries. Subsequently the compression index equations were then further refined and universally applicable compression index equation was developed in 1994. This work would eliminate the necessity of conducting costly and time consuming consolidation testing of most types of soils.
--- This laboratory has developed a new concept Shear Strength of Soils. By this the strength parameters of many types of soils can be estimated using a Mathematical Model developed for this purpose. This Mathematical model in a simple model compared to the other models such as Cam-Clay model, MIT-E3 & several constitutive relations in soils.
--- A Residual Shear apparatus for determining the Shear Strength of rock joints was designed and fabricated during 1980.
