ABOUT US:
The Telangana State Engineering Research Laboratories, the then Andhra Pradesh Engineering Research Laboratories (APERL) is a premier R & D organization of Hyderabad State established in 1945 as Hyderabad Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL). It is one of the oldest Research Institutions in the country. It is located at the toe of Himayatsagar Reservoir right flank and adjacent to Outer ring road, and is accessible to all parts of the Hyderabad City.
Apart from main laboratory at Himayatsagar, one extension centre (Regional Soil Testing Laboratory) is functioning at Warangal, to cater to the needs of one region of Telangana State.

ACTIVITIES
HYDRAULICS LABORATORY
Objectives:
HYDROLOGY LABORATORY
Objectives:
SEDIMENTATION DIVISION
Objectives:
SOIL MECHANICS LABORATORY
Objectives:
Conducting detailed Geotechnical Investigations & Testing of Soils (both field & lab) of various projects.
ENGINEERING MATERIALS LABORATORY
Objectives:
HYDRAULICS LABORATORY
Objectives:
- Carrying out Physical Model Studies for almost all the proposed/existing Major and Medium Irrigation projects either at the design, execution or operational stages and at times saving substantial amount of cost of the project either by decreasing the number of vents/gates or by doing optimum study.
- Calibration / re-rating of the current meters which are used for estimation of velocities in the canals/rivers/streams etc. This is the only laboratory in the state where this facility is available.
- In the recent past years, model studies of Chanaka Korata, Kaleshwaram project, Tuppakulagudem project etc. are taken up.
HYDROLOGY LABORATORY
Objectives:
- Back Water Studies, Studying afflux, Yield from catchments, Flood routing, Gate operation schedules, Reservoir working tables etc. in addition to carrying out physical Model Studies.
- Collection of hydro-meteorological data like (i) Wind velocity, (ii) Sun shine hours, (iii) Humidity, (iv) Daily Minimum, Maximum temperatures and (v) Rainfall data.
SEDIMENTATION DIVISION
Objectives:
- Conducting Hydrographic surveys of reservoirs to assess the capacity of the reservoirs and the rate of sedimentation accumulated in the reservoirs. By conducting Sedimentation Surveys, the life of Reservoir can be assessed and there by doing effective planning water management.
- The capacity surveys are being conducted using the highly sophisticated “Integrated Boat Mounted Bathymetric System (IBS)” equipment.
SOIL MECHANICS LABORATORY
Objectives:
- Conducting detailed Geotechnical Investigations & Testing of Soil samples (both field & lab.) of various projects.
- Conducting Special Laboratory tests like Consolidated Undrained Triaxial Compression test with measurement of Pore Water pressure to find out the effective stress parameters, Consolidation test, Swell Pressure test, California Bearing Ratio test etc.
- Conducting Field tests like Rock Shear tests, Plate Load tests etc.
Conducting detailed Geotechnical Investigations & Testing of Soils (both field & lab) of various projects.
ENGINEERING MATERIALS LABORATORY
Objectives:
- Cement concrete mix design to ensure effective and economical use of locally available materials
- In-situ tests for evaluating strength of Concrete by using Non destructive method and Core extraction method.
- Pull out test of anchor rods in tunnels and rock foundations to assess the bond strength
- Conducting all laboratory tests on engineering materials like cement, aggregates, steel, concrete, bitumen etc.
